For centuries, access to exceptional art was limited to wealthy collectors and museums. In Galveston, Nick Barbee has brought beautiful original art into the homes of islanders thanks to his innovative art lending library. The library functions like a traditional book library: individuals can borrow an artwork, enjoy it in their own home, and return it by a due date. Founded in 2016, this independent art lending library believes living with art and supporting living artists has value. Join Barbee in…

Sam Houston (1793-1863) is remembered today primarily for his activities in Texas, but in fact, he was also a giant of the frontier and a dominant American political figure in the 1800s. His life contains surprising points of identification: the teenaged runaway who fled his controlling family to live with the Indians, the earnest young civil servant almost destroyed by corrupt superiors, the rejected husband who learned too late that his wife did not love him, the alcoholic forced to…

October 20 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Noah Smithwick drifted to Texas in 1827 and remained here for the next thirty-four years of his life. His memoir of that time is a fascinating account of the early history of the Lone Star State when life was extremely tough for these early pioneers. He records in brilliant detail his trials and tribulations, conflicts with fellow pioneers, Mexicans and Native Americans, and how he carved out a life for himself in this frontier territory. From the Fall of the Alamo to the Battle of Brushy Creek, Smithwick chronicles some of the most iconic moments in early Texan history.

October 26 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Early Texas settlers had to contend with a rough environment, predatory animals, lack of medical care, drought, mud, horse and cattle thieves and the uncertainties of the pollical situation with Mexico. And yet, people flocked to Tejas to claim their league and labor of land under the Empresario program administered by Stephen F. Austin. Stop by and visit with historical interpreter Dennis Jones for a lesson in frontier survival and the adaptations needed to thrive on the rich Gulf Coastal prairies.
