Juneteenth Lecture
Thursday, June 20
5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Free with Reservation

For this year’s Juneteenth lecture, we’re excited to bring Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist Joy Sewing to The Bryan Museum. In December, she became the Houston Chronicle’s first Black news columnist in the company’s 122-year history. Sewing reports and opines on critical issues including social justice, politics, education, health care and inequity. She will discuss the Chronicle’s Juneteenth project, in which she covered the historical significance of the national holiday and interviewed descendants of formerly enslaved men and women who made their indelible mark along the Emancipation Trail from Galveston to Houston. Sewing will share her career journey, including being named the Chronicle’s culture columnist in the wake of the George Floyd murder in 2020, and her family legacy. Her great uncle H.W. Sewing, a native Texan, was the founder of the first Black bank in the Midwest. With the rapid changes in the landscape of journalism, Sewing will leave the audience with her observations about the importance of news reporting and storytelling in our lives.
