The League-Kempner House is remarkable for its history as a Nicholas Clayton designed home and as the residence of two of Galveston’s leading families, the J.C. Leagues and the Eliza Kempners. The house remains in its near-original state, both exterior and interior, something that is highly unusual in homes over 130 years old. But perhaps, most remarkable are the people who lived there, particularly the two strong women who moved from lives of ease and “genteel fundraising” to become forces for change and who encouraged their own children to do the same.

Janie Mitcham is a retired utility executive and serial house restorer.  An impulse purchase led her down an unplanned path to create a non-profit and fight to save one of Galveston's last great "Broadway "Beauties".  No stranger to large scale restoration, she currently serves as President of The League-Kempner House.
