The history of Jewish Texas extends far beyond the familiar story of the Galveston Movement. This lecture by Dr. Katz of University of Houston, looks at Crypto-Jewish families whose ancestors lived under Spanish and Mexican colonial rule, when Jewish identity often had to be hidden, adapted, or remembered quietly within the home. Drawing on oral histories, archival research, and family narratives, the lecture explores how fragments of memory, ritual, and identity survived across generations in South and West Texas and the broader borderlands. It asks what we can learn when we place these hidden or less visible stories at the center of Jewish Texas history.
