The Bryan Museum to Honor Philip Anschutz at 4th Annual Galveston Gala

The Bryan Museum announced today that entrepreneur and philanthropist Philip Anschutz will be honored at this year’s 4th Annual Gala, “A Night at the Shamrock,” on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at The Bryan Museum in Galveston, Texas. The theme evokes the Hollywood glamour of Houston’s famed Shamrock Hotel.

One of the country’s most successful investors, Anschutz has been called an “extraordinary businessman” by Fortune Magazine and “one of the world’s 100 greatest living business minds” by Forbes Magazine. Anschutz has donated $2 billion to charity, including $300 million to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Museum Director Joan Marshall said, “The Bryan Museum is honored to recognize Mr. Anschutz for his history-making achievements. He has a true passion for history and reminds us that the enduring appeal of the West is the promise of endless opportunity.”

Each year, the Annual Gala attracts cultural and civic leaders, artists, collectors, patrons of the arts, and history enthusiasts from throughout the United States. The Gala’s fundraising effort helps support the Museum’s dynamic education and outreach programs, putting a spotlight on the important role of history in education. Past honorees include former Secretary of State, James A. Baker, and John L. Nau, III, President of Silver Eagle Distributing in Houston, Texas.

ABOUT THE HONOREE

Philip Anschutz is founder of The Anschutz Corporation, one of the largest privately owned companies in the United States. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, this company, along with its affiliated companies is principally engaged in the transportation, natural and renewable resources, lodging, media, real estate, sports, and entertainment industries.

Born in Russell, Kansas, Anschutz graduated from the University of Kansas. He has served on boards and committees of various charitable, civic, industry, and financial organizations. He currently serves as chairman of The Anschutz Foundation. Philip and Nancy, his wife of 51 years, live in Denver, where they raised their children. His hobbies include the study of American history and the collection of paintings of the American West. He is the author of two books on the development of the American West: Out Where the West Begins: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

The American Museum of Western Art in Denver, Colorado exhibits The Anschutz Collection, an extensive collection of over 600 paintings, drawings, and sculptures representing more than 180 artists of the American West. It is considered one of the finest collections of western art in the country and portions have been exhibited throughout the United States, Canada, Russia, Europe, and China.
